Fiction. It was good, but I read "Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson (last summer in 2013) about his walk on the AT (Appalachian Trail) and it was better. Strayed walked some of the PCT Pacific Crest Trail. She was very honest in the book though, but this is more a memoir about her interspersed with things about the trail. Bryson's book was funnier and had more about the history of the trail and what life is like along the more popular AT. So, if you want more of a history about the U.S. trails and the people who made them and hike them read Bryson; if you want more of a memoir about a young woman who has messed up her life and is trying to find herself by hiking for a few months, then read Strayed (young [26], promiscuous, no real home or job, divorced, trying drugs, lost her mother a few years ago, etc.).
And so it goes...
